This may be a bad idea, but we’re doing it anyway.

I know, let’s decimate our email list!

We’re moving the band email list from MailChimp to Aweber.

The problem is that Aweber requires a double-opt-in.  This means I can’t just force anyone to move to our new email list.  People have to actively sign up AND click a confirmation link.  And that is going to completely decimate our list. I expect to lose between 50 and 90 percent of our subscribers.

So, I’m providing an incentive.  If a $250 raffle isn’t enough incentive for you, then you shouldn’t be on our list!

Some people who don’t give a crap about the band will sign up just to be in the raffle.  And it will really suck if one of those people wins.  But that’s why I didn’t take out Facebook ads – I’m not making this raffle super-public.  Only people who already have some sort of connection to us are seeing this.

So, this is a risk.  But you have to take risks to grow.  And if you’ve been watching, we’re doing a whole hell of a lot of that lately.  A lot of it isn’t working, but if you stick to the tried and true, all you get is the results of conventional wisdom.  And conventional wisdom says there’s no way to make a living in music any more.  So, screw that.  We’re trying new things and taking big risks.  We’ll see what works and what doesn’t.

So… why do this at all?

Social media isn’t a great way to connect.  At least not reliably.

I “like” other artists’ pages on Facebook all the time, but I almost never end up seeing their news in my feed.  We all know that Facebook is becoming a paid ad platform. And on Twitter we have a modest 700 or so followers, but how many of them even see our tweets in their crowded timelines?

Email may not be perfect, but it’s still a better way to keep in touch than all the other options.   So if you have Liked us on Facebook or followed us on Twitter, we’d like to ask you to consider signing up on our email list.
